What He’s a Second Grader???

It’s the last day of first grade!  Can you tell Tanner is just a little excited?

I can’t believe it my little boy is a second grader.  Yes, it was touch and go for awhile but Tanner passed first grade!  Actually first grade was a great year for him.  Tanner really took off with his reading and math and most importantly came out of his shell and is not as shy anymore!  He actually will talk to people, like carry on a conversation without me prompting him to talk.  He used to just hide behind me or meekly answer yes or no to any questions an adult would ask him.  At Tanner’s end of year music performance the music teacher actually had Tanner and a few other kids stand up and honored them as being the kids she was most proud of that had gone outside their comfort zone and tried new things.  I know this is surprising to anyone that sees Tanner at  home where he will talk your ear off, but really in public places Tanner used to go mute.  It was really annoying and embarrassing because it often seemed as Tanner was being rude when he wouldn’t answer an adult when they asked him a question and it drove me crazy!!  I’m sure I will probably regret Tanner opening up and talking when he starts telling everyone at school embarrassing stories from home!  Anyway Tanner had a great end of year.  Last week they went to the zoo on a field trip and daddy Don went with them.   They had a great time and Don developed a new appreciation for what I do all day as an elementary school teacher, thank you very much!  Today Tanner had field day and  had a great time running around crazy with his friends.

Seriously what is the end of school without field day and the traditional tug of war match!  A fun first grade tradition is that each class tye dyes T-shirts of a different color and then all the first graders wear them on the field trip and last day of school.  It’s so much fun to see them all in their shirts.  Tanner was bummed when he learned his shirt color would be purple because he thinks that is a GIRL color, but then he got over it when he found out that purple is his teacher’s favorite color.  He loves his teacher so now he thinks purple is a really cool color!   So Tanner is another year smarter!  now bring on  the summer fun!
